A Dive Into a "Cursed" Cave Ended in a Mystery That Stunned Everyone!
22 Jul 2026A group of experienced divers from Italy set out to explore the caves near Vaavu Atoll, about an hour away by speedboat south of Malé, the capital of the Maldives... At the time, the sea was rough, and the wind was growing stronger. The divers headed into a network of underwater caves that had long been surrounded by unsettling stories and local legends... When the group failed to surface at the scheduled time, it initially seemed like nothing more than a delay caused by the difficult route. But as more time passed, it became increasingly clear that something had gone terribly wrong...
The Morning That Seemed Like The Beginning Of A Dream...
That morning in the Maldives looked exactly the way it does on postcards. The sun was just beginning to rise above the ocean, the water shimmered in dozens of shades of turquoise, and the gentle sea breeze felt so pleasant... It seemed that one of the most beautiful dives of their lives awaited the members of the expedition. No one could have imagined that just a few hours later terrifying legends would be told about this very day... The group consisted of instructor Gianluca Benedetti, University of Genoa associate professor of ecology Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, marine biologist Federico Gualtieri, and researcher Muriel Oddenino.

All of them were experienced divers who had come to explore the famous underwater cave system near Vaavu Atoll, about an hour by speedboat south of the Maldivian capital, Malé. No one doubted this would be another successful scientific expedition... but they could not have been more wrong...
Giorgia Woke Up In A Cold Sweat
Despite the beauty of the morning, Giorgia couldn't shake the feeling of unease. The night before, she had such a strange dream that after opening her eyes, she sat on the bed for several minutes trying to catch her breath. In the dream, she was already deep underwater. A wide entrance to a dark cave opened before her but the closer she swam, the stronger the current pulled her inside.

At one point, she saw the silhouette of a woman. The stranger stood perfectly still underwater, even though there were no air bubbles or movement around her. The woman slowly raised her hand and quietly said, "Don't go in..." Then the cave seemed to slam shut, and everything around her disappeared into complete darkness. Giorgia woke up with a start, feeling as though her heart was about to burst out of her chest.
– It was just a dream... – she quietly said to herself, although the uneasy feeling refused to go away.
At Breakfast, Her Mother Only Smiled At Her Fears
At breakfast, Giorgia finally decided to tell her mother about the dream.
– Mom... I had the strangest dream. It was like some woman was trying to stop me and begged me not to go into the cave.
Monica calmly took a sip of her coffee and smiled at her daughter.
– You've been thinking about this dive for too long. Sometimes our brains turn ordinary thoughts into scary dreams.

– But it all felt so real...
– Giorgia, we're scientists, not ghost hunters. We've spent months preparing for this expedition, studying the maps and checking the equipment. Everything will be fine. Don't let one dream ruin such an important day.
Giorgia simply nodded, although somehow the anxiety inside her only grew stronger...
Federico Decided To Scare Everyone Even More...
Their conversation was accidentally overheard by marine biologist Federico Gualtieri, who had just walked over with a tray and sat down at the next table.
– Oh, so you're already talking about the local ghosts? – he asked with a smile.
Giorgia looked up in surprise.
– What ghosts?

Federico put on a mysterious expression and leaned closer, lowering his voice.
– The local fishermen tell a story. Many years ago, a woman diver explored these very caves. The rest of her team made it back to the surface... but she never did.
Giorgia froze...
Giorgia's breathing slowed...
– Did they ever find her? – Giorgia asked nervously.
Federico Slowly Shook His Head...
– No. They say her body was never found. But some divers later claimed that deep inside the caves they sometimes saw the figure of a woman standing in the darkness... just watching them...
Silence fell over the table.
– Stop it... – Giorgia said quietly.
Federico held the dramatic pause for a few more seconds before bursting into loud laughter.
– I'm kidding! It's just an old story they tell tourists. You should've seen your faces!
Giorgia playfully smacked him on the shoulder.

– You're impossible! I almost believed you!
Everyone laughed. Even Monica shook her head.
– Sometimes you really act like a child.
– Well, at least now everyone's fully awake! – Federico smiled.
None of them knew that just a few hours later, that harmless joke would sound very different...
Even The Most Experienced Divers Were Troubled By The Sea
When the group walked out to the boat, the weather no longer looked as calm as it had earlier that morning. The ocean had noticeably darkened... The waves were growing higher, and the wind continued to strengthen with every passing minute. The boat bounced across the water more violently than usual. Gianluca carefully studied the horizon.
– The weather is changing faster than they predicted.
Muriel looked up at the sky.
– Maybe we should wait a little longer?

But the captain only shrugged.
– For experienced divers, the conditions are still acceptable. Yes, the current has picked up but nothing critical.
Monica checked the forecast one more time before calmly saying:
– We'll be fine. The important thing is to stick to the planned route and stay together at all times.
Everyone agreed. No one wanted to cancel an expedition they had been preparing for for so long...
Those Caves Were Considered Among The Most Dangerous In The Maldives...
Their destination was the famous underwater cave system at Vaavu Atoll. The entrance began at a depth of about forty-seven meters. From there, the tunnels stretched deeper and deeper until they reached nearly seventy meters at their lowest point. The place fascinated and terrified professional divers at the same time. Narrow passages, sudden changes in depth, powerful underwater currents, and the near-total absence of natural light turned every dive into a true test. But that was exactly why the scientists wanted to explore it.

The caves remained largely unexplored, and their ecosystem was of enormous interest to researchers. Just before entering the water, Giorgia looked once more at the dark surface... For a brief moment, she remembered the mysterious woman from her dream again. She quietly exhaled, adjusted her mask, and tried to push those thoughts away. If only she had known that these caves would soon become a trap for the entire group, perhaps she would never have taken that final step into the unknown...
The Last Message Before The Dive
While the rest of the expedition members performed one final equipment check, Giorgia stepped aside for a few minutes. She pulled her phone out of her pocket, quickly opened the chat with the man she loved, whose name was Fred, and smiled. Today she was finally going to see one of the most beautiful places in the Maldives.

She quickly typed a message:
– In a few hours I'll show you a real underwater paradise. I promise you've never seen photos like these before. The moment I surface, I'll send them all to you.
His reply came almost instantly.
– I'll be waiting. Just don't forget that you promised to come back safe and sound.
If only it had been that simple...
At That Moment, She Was So Happy...
Giorgia quietly laughed.
– Of course. It's just a regular dive.
She slipped her phone into a waterproof case and hurried back to the others. Later, her boyfriend would admit that at the time he hadn't thought much of that message... and he would regret it.
– She was happy... She had been looking forward to that dive so much. We planned to talk that evening, and I was simply waiting for her message.

Neither of them knew that this brief conversation would become the last peaceful exchange before the events that would leave dozens of people staring out at the ocean for hours...
Everything Went According To Plan Before The Jump
A familiar working atmosphere filled the deck. Gianluca checked the route one more time, Muriel inspected the flashlights, Federico carefully examined the equipment, and Monica, as always, paid attention to every tiny detail.
– Have the tank pressures been checked?
– Checked.
– Are the backup flashlights working?

– Everything is fine.
– We'll review our hand signals once we're underwater, – Gianluca said calmly. – As always, no one separates from the group.
Everyone nodded together. They had heard these instructions dozens of times before. Discipline had always been considered the most important rule when exploring underwater caves.
The Last Chance To Change Their Minds
As the boat approached the dive site, the ocean already looked completely different from how it had that morning. The waves had grown noticeably higher, and the wind kept rocking the vessel. For several minutes, everyone silently stared at the water.
The captain was the first to break the silence.
– If anyone feels like today isn't their day, it's better to say so now. In places like this, you should never argue with the sea.
An unusual silence settled over the deck. Giorgia couldn't help remembering the uneasy feeling she had carried with her since early that morning...

Monica noticed her daughter had gone quiet.
– Is everything okay?
– Yeah... It's just a strange feeling.
– The moment you get underwater, you'll forget all about those thoughts.
Federico winked at her.
– And no mysterious women from old legends. Today we're only expecting coral and fish.
Everyone laughed again, and the tension seemed to disappear.
No One Knew What Was Waiting For Them Inside The Caves
The entrance to the underwater cave system was located at a depth of about forty-seven meters, and from there the tunnels gradually descended to nearly seventy meters. These caves attracted scientists from all over the world because of their barely explored ecosystem and their incredibly complex terrain.
Just before the dive began, Gianluca looked at every member of the group one last time.
– Stay calm. Don't rush. If anything seems unusual, report it to the group immediately.

– Understood, – everyone answered almost at the same time.
They still had no idea that this very rule would soon become the most important one of all. For now, all that lay ahead was dark water, mysterious tunnels, and a mission that seemed like an ordinary scientific expedition. No one could even imagine that before long this very day would shock even experienced rescue divers who thought they had seen everything... but had never seen anything like this...
Everything Changed The Moment They Went Underwater
One by one, the divers stepped off the side of the boat and disappeared beneath the surface of the ocean. The sound of the wind instantly gave way to near silence. All that remained was the steady rhythm of breathing through their regulators and the occasional stream of bubbles floating toward the surface.
The first few minutes went exactly as planned. The group slowly descended deeper and deeper while maintaining formation. The water became cooler around them, and with every passing meter, less sunlight managed to reach them...

Giorgia looked at her mother. Monica gave her a thumbs-up, asking if everything was okay.
Giorgia answered with the same gesture.
Federico swam closer and, seeing that she had finally calmed down after her worries that morning, pointed toward a school of shimmering silver fish racing past them. Even underwater, Giorgia smiled.
It seemed that the disturbing dream from the morning had finally been left behind...
It Was As If The Cave Didn't Want To Let Them In...
When their dive computers showed a depth of about forty-seven meters, a dark entrance to the cave slowly appeared before the group. From a distance, it looked like a massive crack in the rock where daylight disappeared almost instantly.
The water near the entrance suddenly became much more turbulent. Even the experienced divers felt the current sharply pulling them sideways several times.

Gianluca immediately raised his hand, signaling everyone to stop.
The entire group remained suspended in the water...
He carefully studied the passage before pointing his flashlight toward the direction they would take...
It Was a Tense Moment...
Monica swam closer.
– Is everything okay? – she asked using hand signals.
Gianluca nodded.
– The current is stronger than we expected.

Federico checked the readings on his dive computer and signaled that all the parameters were still within normal limits. For several seconds, the group seemed to be listening to the ocean itself. Then, one by one, the researchers slowly entered the dark passage... there was no turning back anymore.
Every Meter Became More Difficult
Inside the cave, the surrounding world changed within seconds. Their flashlights illuminated only small sections of the rocky walls before everything disappeared into thick darkness once again. The space became much narrower, forcing the divers to move almost single file.
Suddenly, the current grew even stronger. It was no longer just noticeable... the water was now visibly pushing them forward, forcing everyone to constantly control their buoyancy.
Giorgia felt herself being gently turned sideways. She quickly corrected her position and looked at her mother.

Monica signaled:
– Stay calm.
Giorgia took a deep breath through her regulator and nodded.
Behind them, Federico carefully swept his flashlight along the cave wall, checking for hidden side passages. Caves like these were dangerous because even an experienced diver could lose their sense of direction if distracted for even a single second.
For now, everything remained under control.
But with every new meter, it became more and more obvious that inside this cave, remaining calm was far easier said than done...
Fred Still Had No Idea That The Nightmare Had Already Begun...
Hundreds of kilometers away from the Maldives, Giorgia's boyfriend, Fred, was sitting at home, constantly glancing at his phone screen. Much more time had passed since Giorgia's last message than he had expected. He knew perfectly well that dives like this could sometimes take longer than planned, so at first he tried not to think too much about it. Several times he opened their chat, reread her last message, and couldn't help smiling.

Just a little while ago, she had excitedly promised to show him a real underwater paradise... He kept telling himself that his phone would vibrate any minute now, the photos would arrive, and that evening they would spend hours talking about everything she had seen. But the minutes kept slipping by one after another...
He Was On The Verge Of A Panic Attack...
Another half hour passed, and the anxiety became too much. Fred could no longer sit still. He looked at the clock once again and finally decided to call her.
– Come on... Please... Answer...

Only the endless ringing echoed through the phone....
– They're probably still underwater... Of course... Otherwise she would've answered by now... He had no idea that at that very moment, deep beneath the water, Giorgia's true nightmare was only just beginning...
Giorgia Suddenly Found Herself Completely Alone...
The current suddenly became even stronger. It was as if it had decided to change direction on its own, violently pushing the group forward. Flashlight beams scattered wildly across the cave walls. Giorgia looked away for only a brief moment to keep her balance but when she looked ahead again, her heart instantly tightened. There was no one in front of her anymore. Not her mother. Not Gianluca. Not anyone...

There was only thick darkness and a narrow tunnel stretching somewhere ahead. She quickly swept her flashlight around her. The rocky walls reflected the light but there wasn't a single person in sight. She spun around. Nothing...
– Mom?...
Of course, no one could hear her voice underwater...
She Tried To Catch Up With The Group... But Everything Only Became Worse...
At first, Giorgia convinced herself that the others had simply disappeared around the next bend in the tunnel. She began swimming faster, carefully lighting the path ahead of her. Her flashlight beam darted across the cave walls, desperately searching for even the slightest shadow or a trail of bubbles. Sometimes she thought she caught a glimpse of someone's silhouette ahead. She sped up, only to realize a few seconds later that it was nothing more than strange rock formations.

The current constantly pushed her off course. Every new turn looked almost identical to the last one. It was as if the cave itself was deliberately making every direction look exactly the same. The faster she tried to catch up with the others, the more she realized she had completely lost her sense of direction...
Her Air Supply Was Slowly Running Out...
Almost automatically, Giorgia glanced at the display on her dive computer. The pressure in her tank continued to drop little by little. The numbers were not critical yet but she knew perfectly well that under conditions like these, air was consumed much faster than usual. Her breathing gradually became heavier. She forced herself to calm down because she knew every diver's most important rule - panic burns through your air faster than anything else.
– Stay calm... Just stay calm...

She took several deep breaths through her regulator.
– The most important thing is to find the others...
But the sound of her own breathing had already become frighteningly loud. Every breath reminded her that time was running out... and she had no idea that all of them had made their biggest mistake before the dive had even begun... and that mistake was about to cost them far more than they could ever have imagined...
The Darkness Began Playing Tricks On Her Mind...
The deeper Giorgia moved into the cave, the stranger everything around her became. Out of the corner of her eye, she kept thinking she saw the beam of someone else's flashlight somewhere ahead. She would immediately turn toward it, only to find nothing but a bare stone wall. Several times she was convinced that someone had just swum past her. She spun around, sweeping her flashlight through the darkness but once again found only the dark water and her own bubbles slowly rising toward the ceiling of the cave.

She found herself thinking more and more about the strange dream she had that morning and Federico's story about the woman who had disappeared inside these caves. Just a few hours earlier, it had all sounded like a ridiculous legend... Now it was becoming harder and harder to force herself not to think about it... and if she had known what was happening to the other members of her group at that very moment, she would have been even more terrified...
Memories Became Her Only Lifeline...
To keep herself from giving in to panic, Giorgia forced herself to think about something completely different. She understood that if she allowed fear to take control now, she would begin breathing faster, and her air would run out much sooner. She closed her eyes for only a second and suddenly remembered herself as a little girl. It was the first time her mother had taken her to the marine research laboratory. Giorgia spent the entire day running between aquariums, staring at starfish, sea urchins, and tiny octopuses, and that evening she excitedly told everyone that one day she would become a scientist just like her mother...

That was the moment the ocean became part of her life. It was as if she could hear Monica's voice once again.
– See? The ocean never likes those who are afraid of it.
– What if I get scared?
– Then just stop... take a breath... and remember that the sea feels every movement you make.
Even now, those words unexpectedly helped her take several calmer breaths...
She Remembered Her Very First Real Dive...
The memory of a day she had waited for so long suddenly appeared before her eyes. It was the first time she had ever been allowed to dive with her mother. Giorgia had been unbelievably nervous and kept adjusting her mask over and over again. Just before they jumped into the water, Monica smiled at her.
– Ready?
– I don't think so...
– Then it's the perfect time to begin.
They entered the water together, and only a few minutes later Giorgia couldn't believe what she was seeing.

Enormous coral reefs, colorful fish, and absolute silence felt like pure magic. When they surfaced, she hugged her mother right there on the boat.
– That was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!
Monica simply laughed.
– I knew there'd be no stopping you after this.
Remembering that day, Giorgia couldn't help smiling even now... but once before, when she was still a child, she had already lived through a terrifying experience very similar to this one...
Once Before, Her Mother Had Saved Her...
Then another memory unexpectedly returned. Several years earlier, they had been diving together once again. Everything had begun perfectly normally until the current suddenly became much stronger. Giorgia was violently spun around, and her mask shifted out of place. For a few terrifying seconds, she completely lost her sense of direction. She still remembered how her heart had almost burst out of her chest. But only a moment later, Monica appeared beside her. She calmly swam over, adjusted her daughter's mask, firmly took her by the hand, and gave her a signal.

– Look only at me.
Giorgia nodded obediently. Only a few minutes later, they surfaced safely. Later, Monica told her words she would remember for the rest of her life.
– Panic kills much faster than any depth ever will.
That was the moment Giorgia understood why everyone considered her mother one of the very best specialists... however, even the very best specialists make mistakes...
It Was Diving That Once Brought Her Together With The Love Of Her Life...
To keep herself from completely losing control, Giorgia forced herself to think about something good once again. She pictured Fred's face. She remembered his smile... His last words before the dive... And suddenly she realized how desperately she wanted to see him again. Over and over, she repeated only one sentence to herself.

– I'm going to make it out... I have to...
At that moment, it was the memories of him that were keeping her from panicking far more than any survival training ever could...
It All Began Three Years Earlier...
Her memories seemed to carry her back exactly three years. At that time, Giorgia could never have imagined that one ordinary working dive would completely change her life. It happened near the Canary Islands.

That day, she was helping an instructor guide a small group of beginners who had decided to try scuba diving for the very first time. Besides the crew, there were only five tourists on the boat. Some nervously adjusted their wetsuits, some asked endless questions, and others already regretted agreeing to dive at all. That was the very moment she saw him for the first time...
She Noticed Him Immediately...
While the other tourists were visibly nervous, one young man sat calmly on the edge of the boat, quietly staring out at the ocean. He barely spoke and only smiled from time to time as he watched everything happening around him. Giorgia found herself looking at him longer than she intended. "Strange..." she thought.

At that very moment, the young man unexpectedly turned around. Their eyes met for only a few seconds. He smiled. Giorgia quickly looked away, pretending to check the equipment... But for some reason, she couldn't help smiling too.
Fred Couldn't Take His Eyes Off Her Either...
That tourist was Fred. Years later, he would admit that he noticed Giorgia almost the moment she stepped onto the boat.
– I don't know why... But I couldn't look at anyone else.
She confidently checked the equipment, calmly spoke with everyone, and looked as though the ocean had always been her second home.

Fred suddenly realized he had almost completely stopped listening to the instructor. All he could do was watch her. "She's so beautiful..." flashed through his mind. He had no idea that just a few hours later he would find an excuse to meet her... and that this very day would completely change both of their lives...
Fred Did Everything He Could To Dive With Her...
While the beginner group prepared for their first dive, Fred quietly walked over to the instructor.
– Excuse me... Is it possible for her to be my dive guide?
The instructor looked at him with surprise.
– Giorgia?
Fred smiled awkwardly.
– Yes... It's just... She seems like the most experienced one.
The instructor smirked.
– Or the prettiest one?

Fred couldn't help smiling.
– Maybe... That too.
A few minutes later, the instructor called Giorgia over.
– You'll be taking one beginner. Apparently, he only trusts you.
Giorgia looked at Fred and immediately understood who he meant. A faint smile appeared on her face.
– Alright. Then let's get ready.
Inside, Fred was celebrating. His little plan had worked exactly the way he had hoped...
During The Safety Briefing, He Barely Heard A Single Word...
Giorgia calmly explained the safety procedures, showed him the equipment, and carefully described what he should do underwater.
– If you feel uncomfortable, show me this signal immediately.
She raised her hand.
– If you run out of air...

Fred nodded.
– Got it.
– If you lose sight of me...
– Of course.
In reality, he barely heard a single word she said. All of his attention was completely focused on her.
Love at First Sight...
He watched the way she brushed her hair back, the confidence with which she handled the equipment, and the gentle smile she gave every beginner. "She's incredible..." he thought once again. Giorgia suddenly noticed the distant look in his eyes and quietly laughed.
– Are you even listening to me?
Fred blinked awkwardly.
– Of course... Most of it...

– Most of it?
– Honestly... I got a little distracted...
She smiled even wider.
– Then after the dive, I'm giving you a test.
Underwater, He Was Terrified... But He Refused To Admit It...
When they stepped off the side of the boat together and disappeared beneath the surface, Fred's heart immediately started racing. Despite the smile on his face, he was genuinely terrified inside. It was his very first real dive. But Giorgia was swimming beside him. Every now and then she turned around and gave him the familiar hand signal.
– Everything okay?

Fred instantly answered with a thumbs-up, even though his hands inside the gloves were already damp with nervous sweat. At one point, Giorgia swam closer and gently tapped his shoulder before pointing toward a giant sea turtle slowly gliding just a few feet away. In that instant, Fred completely forgot about his fear. Years later, he would admit that day he hadn't been admiring the underwater world at all.
– Honestly... I spent the whole dive looking only at her...
He Finally Found The Perfect Excuse To Ask Her Out...
After the dive, Fred stayed at the pier for a long time, waiting until Giorgia had finished helping the other tourists. Finally, he walked over to her.
– Thank you... Without you, I definitely would've been a lot more scared.
She smiled.
– Well... Now you're officially a diver.
Fred hesitated for a moment.
– Listen... Maybe sometime we could dive together again?
– Why not?

– Then... Could I have your number?
For several seconds, Giorgia looked at him as if she understood perfectly well that this wasn't really about diving anymore.
– Only if you promise to actually listen during the safety briefing next time.
Fred laughed.
– I promise.
Their Second Dive Changed Everything...
A few days later, they really did dive together again. This time there were no nervous beginners, no instructors constantly giving directions, and no awkward silence between them. They talked before the dive, laughed afterward, and somehow every conversation seemed to last longer than the one before.

By the time they climbed back onto the boat, both of them realized they were already looking forward to seeing each other again... although neither of them was ready to admit it out loud.
After That Evening, They Could No Longer Imagine Life Without Each Other...
After their second dive, Fred finally found the courage.
– Maybe... This time we could meet without wetsuits?
Giorgia laughed softly.
– Is that your way of asking me on a date?
– I really hope it is.
She looked straight into his eyes.

– Then my answer is yes.
That evening ended with a long walk along the ocean. They talked for hours without ever running out of things to say, and before the night was over, they both realized they didn't want to say goodbye. Later, they would both admit that it was that very evening when they finally understood... they were already hopelessly in love with each other...
At First, Everything Seemed Perfect...
After that date, they started seeing each other almost every day. Sometimes they met in the morning over a cup of coffee, then drove to the ocean together, and in the evenings they spent hours walking along the shore. Everything happened so naturally that later neither of them could even remember who had suggested moving in together first. At first, Fred stayed overnight at Giorgia's place more and more often. Then his toothbrush appeared in her bathroom. After that, a few of his T-shirts found their way into her closet. And one day, he simply carried in his last suitcase and placed it by the front door.

– I guess... this makes it official now?
– Were you even planning to ask me?
– Honestly?
– You weren't going to ask at all?
– I was afraid you'd say no.
She stepped closer.
– Then it's a good thing you didn't ask...
From that day on, they woke up and fell asleep beside each other, feeling for the first time that they had finally found their real home...
Fred Never Got Used To Her Job...
Even though diving was what had brought them together in the first place, Fred soon realized one thing... Every single time Giorgia disappeared beneath the water, he began worrying terribly. Especially when the dive was deep or took place somewhere unfamiliar. He always waited for her return with his phone in his hand until he received one short message.
– Everything's fine. I'm back on the surface.
Only then could he finally breathe again.
– You were worried again, weren't you?
– Just a little...

– Fred...
– Okay... A lot.
Every time, she wrapped her arms around him.
– Nothing is going to happen to me.
But somehow, those words never managed to calm him down...
One Conversation Over Dinner Almost Changed Everything!
One evening, Giorgia excitedly told him that she had been invited to join a new scientific expedition.
– Can you imagine? We're going to explore a completely new cave system.
She expected Fred to smile along with her. Instead, he suddenly fell silent.
– You're going underground again... Only this time it's underwater too?
She looked at him in surprise.

– It's my job.
– I know...
– Then why are you reacting like this?
Fred stayed quiet for a long moment.
– Because one day... you might simply not come back...
Fred Felt As If He Could Sense Trouble...
The months passed but Fred's anxiety never disappeared. On the contrary... With every new dive, it only became stronger. Sometimes he woke up in the middle of the night after strange dreams in which he saw nothing but endless dark water. Sometimes he caught himself checking his phone for no reason, even though he knew perfectly well that Giorgia was underwater and couldn't answer. He couldn't explain where that feeling had come from.
– I'm really okay.

– I know...
– Then why are you looking at me like that?
Fred let out a heavy sigh.
– I don't know... Sometimes it just feels like... one day something terrible is going to happen.
Giorgia simply hugged him tighter.
– It won't...
Right Now, He Was Still Waiting For Her Message...
At that very moment, while Giorgia was desperately trying to escape the underwater trap, hundreds of kilometers away Fred couldn't take his eyes off his phone. He opened their conversation over and over again. Her last message was still the same promise to send him photos of the underwater paradise. By now, he should have received at least a short message saying, "We're back on the surface." But the screen remained silent. An hour passed...

Then another... Fred kept walking to the window, returning to his phone, and trying to convince himself that scientific dives often took longer than expected.
– Everything's fine... They're probably still working...
But with every passing minute, he believed himself less and less...
His Intuition Had Been Right...
A little while later, Fred finally stopped trying to distract himself. He suddenly realized... something had definitely gone wrong. He had felt this before but back then Giorgia had simply reassured him. Now the anxiety barely let him breathe. He paced around the apartment, calling her phone every few minutes, only to hear the same endless ringing. Then he sent her several messages in a row.
– Where are you?
– Are you okay?

– Please... Just answer...
There was no reply. So he started searching for the contact information of the diving center in the Maldives, the expedition organizers, and anyone who might know something about the group. Inside him, the feeling he had tried to ignore for so long continued to grow... The very feeling he had once confessed to Giorgia.
The Search Had Already Begun In The Maldives...
When the group failed to surface at the scheduled time, the organizers initially assumed that the expedition had simply been delayed on a difficult route. That sometimes happened during scientific dives. But time kept passing. Their air supply should have run out long ago. The captain of the boat was the first to raise the alarm. Rescue teams, boats, and other divers quickly rushed to the dive site. Before long, what had started as simple waiting turned into a massive search operation.

Fred was among the first to learn about it. He immediately contacted the local police, desperately trying to get any information.
– Please... Just tell me they've been found...
– We're doing everything we can... The search is still ongoing...
But no one could give him an answer...
Everyone Still Believed They Were Alive...
The first day passed. Then the second. Despite the growing fear, many people still hoped for a miracle. Some believed that a powerful current might have carried the group far away from the dive site. Others suggested that the divers had managed to reach one of the uninhabited islands where there simply was no communication. No one wanted to believe the worst. After all, these weren't inexperienced tourists.

They were one of the most experienced research diving teams.
– They're professionals.
– People like them know exactly what they're doing.
– Something couldn't have happened to all of them at once...
Those were the words Fred clung to more than anything else. He repeated them over and over again like a prayer...
Another Tragedy Happened During The Search...
The rescue operation turned out to be so dangerous that another tragedy soon struck. During one of the search dives, one of the rescuers lost his life while looking for the missing group. The news shocked everyone. If even a specially trained rescue diver couldn't make it out of that cave system alive, then just how dangerous were those caves? Local residents once again began talking about the old stories surrounding the "Shark Cave."

– Even a rescuer didn't make it back...
– What is happening inside those caves?..
Even many members of the search team admitted that they had never encountered conditions this difficult before. The atmosphere grew heavier with every passing hour...
What The Rescuers Discovered Shocked Everyone...
Later, the bodies of all the expedition members were found near the so-called "Shark Cave" - a complex system of underwater passages where even experienced divers can easily lose their sense of direction. That alone was the first shock. According to the investigation, the group had entered the cave system without the complete equipment required specifically for cave diving.

They had no guideline reels or navigation lines, which are considered absolutely essential in places like this.
– In conditions like these, one wrong turn... and you may never find the exit again, one of the rescuers later said.
But that wasn't even the biggest mystery...
Even Experienced Specialists Couldn't Explain It...
As investigators carefully reconstructed what had happened, one strange detail emerged. Some of the bodies were found far from where experts expected them to be based on the depth, water currents, and layout of the cave itself. Several of the victims were discovered much higher up, near the upper section of the enclosed cave system. To many specialists, it seemed almost impossible.

– How could they have ended up there at all?
– The currents shouldn't have carried them that high...
That question quickly became the biggest mystery of the entire tragedy. Some experts pointed to unusually powerful underwater currents. Others blamed rare geological features of the cave system. But none of the theories fully explained what had happened...
More And More Theories Began To Appear...
While experts continued trying to reconstruct the divers' final moments, dozens of rumors began spreading around the tragedy. Some people recalled old legends about the cursed cave. Others believed the scientists had encountered an unknown natural phenomenon. Social media quickly filled with the most unbelievable theories.

– Maybe they found something they were never supposed to see?
– Or maybe something truly unexplained is happening inside those caves?..
But the specialists continued searching for answers in facts rather than legends...
The Cause Of Their Deaths Brought Everyone To Tears...
Despite all the frightening theories, many specialists believe that the most likely cause of the tragedy was nitrogen narcosis - a dangerous condition that can occur during deep dives while breathing compressed gas. It can impair judgment, create a false sense of euphoria, reduce decision-making ability, and trigger panic. That is why deep divers often use special breathing gas mixtures designed to reduce this risk.

British Cave Rescue Council diving instructor John Volanthen suggested that the Italian divers may simply have become disoriented deep inside the cave system. According to him, narcosis can become so severe that even highly experienced divers lose all sense of direction and can no longer recognize where the exit is. Inside a labyrinth of underwater tunnels, just a few minutes of panic may be enough for there to be no way back...
This Story Changed Everyone Who Heard It Forever...
The Vaavu Atoll expedition remains one of the most tragic diving disasters in the history of the Maldives. It reminded the entire world that underwater caves do not forgive even the smallest mistakes. One wrong decision, missing equipment, or a brief loss of orientation can cost even the most experienced professionals their lives. But for Fred, the investigation's conclusions no longer changed anything.

He never received the message with the photos of the underwater paradise that Giorgia had promised to send as soon as they surfaced... And her final message remained forever... the last reminder of the woman who believed until the very end that she would make it home...
